Goals: First, Decide What You Want

hit your goals targetAs we roll into the holiday season and year-end, our focus will soon turn toward New Year’s resolutions and our goals for next year. In preparation for that I will have a series of weekly blogs reminding you of goal setting and achievement basics. Here’s to a great start to your new year!

In order to get from where you are to where you want to be, you must first decide what you want!  Jack Canfield, in his book The Success Principles, tells us that most people foul up this crucial first step because they simply can’t see how it’s possible to get what they want – so they don’t even let themselves want it.

WHAT SCIENCE NOW KNOWS ABOUT GOALS

What scientists now know about how the brain works is that you must first decide WHAT you want, before your brain can figure out HOW to get it.  As soon as you lock-in your desire, your subconscious creative mind will come up with big ideas to make it happen.  Your reticular activating system will begin to notice and attract the people, resources and opportunities that you need to make your dream come true.

MAKE GOALS MEASURABLE

Once you’re clear about what you want, you must then turn each item into a measurable goal.  That is, what do you want, and by when. Write down your goals in detail, and read your list everyday.  I recommend writing down a minimum of three goals in each of the seven life areas:  physical, financial, professional, relational, spiritual, personal, and philanthropical. My Personal Strategic Plan is a helpful tool, download it here. Now pick your top three goals from all seven areas, focus on those, and work your way done the list.
